The biological sciences have progressed leaps and bounds. There is no denying that microbes are center of biological sciences these days and most of the new technologies in fact are based on microbes or microbe based knowledge. In spite of their smallest size, the impact of microbes on the planet is so extensive that life without them is almost impossible. The study of microorganisms cannot be overemphasized as they are necessary for the production of antibiotics, vitamins, organic acids, enzymes, biologics and vaccines. Over and above, microbes also serve as the basis and the major tools in the fields of molecular biology, modern biotechnology and genetic engineering.
The School of Science at UMT offers a four-year BS Microbiology degree program. The core concepts and skills are taught through a sequence of core courses, along with the advanced electives carefully chosen in view of the fundamental applications of microbiology. The courses are designed for the students so that they learn the advanced methods in microbiology, laboratory and literature-based research, and develop the concepts and skills to apply their expertise in professional life.
The BS in Microbiology provides strong research training for students who are interested in research career in academia, medicine, or industry, and in related careers in which first-hand research experience is an asset, or as a prelude to more advanced degrees.
The program produces graduates with the necessary skills to become productive and ethical contributors to scientific research. Moreover, graduates are prepared to advance their education through additional graduate trainings, enter industry and begin an academic career.
Graduates of this program can expect promising careers in the following roles and fields:
